FAQs

What happens in Winter?

Snow removal is much easier with rubber paving. Rubber paving in Canada helps prevent ice buildup and provides traction in snowy winters with its slightly porous surface. Water doesn't pool on the surface, so there's less glare ice that causes falls and injuries. The textured surface of the snow shovel helps to remove heavy snow and ice more easily than concrete. Concrete can have ice that sticks stubbornly to the surface. If needed it is safe to use salt or any other de-icer. We recommend using a plastic shovel and outfitting your snow blower with plastic stripping.

Can you install over gravel?

YES – install rubber surfacing over sub-surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, paving stones, or compacted granular. Some applications have varying substrate that requires proper base preparation. Typically, any solid surface is OK to surface. You can put rubber paving on top of your old asphalt or concrete without taking it out, saving you money.

How long will it last?

Shercom has rubber surfacing installations that have been around for over 20 years, and they are still looking great. Rubber paving is a very durable product. Shercom Industries installed the first rubber driveway in Saskatoon in 1998. It still looks great today! With a little care and attention, plan on your Shercom rubber surfacing to last a very long time.

Can I use rubber surfacing for indoor flooring?

A. Yes, you can, provided you have water drain under.

about our

Our Process

Shercom creates rubber paving by mixing recycled rubber with a special binding agent using a formula. Now, people can use rubber paving for sidewalks, patios, decks, pool decks, sports courts, running tracks, pathways, and trails. Rubber paving can be put anywhere and can improve any surface, even if it looks bad now.

WHAT WE DO

Rubber Crumb

Rubber paving uses shredded tires without metal bands. The rubber crumb is a specific size and made from recycled tires. This rubber crumb is mixed with a specialized binding agent. People use this mix on surfaces like concrete or asphalt. You can also press it into gravel mixes. The layer is typically about one inch thick. People commonly use it for driveways, sidewalks, and patios. Workers apply the material. They then smooth and pack it. This creates a solid and even surface. The surface is for a rubber crumb driveway near me.

When calculating costs, we generally determine the rubber driveway cost based on a cost per square foot. Rubber driveways may cost more upfront, but they are durable and require less maintenance, saving money in the long run. Rubber paving driveway contractors near me offer quotes and explain the benefits of using rubber surfacing for long-lasting results.

What happens in winter?

Snow removal is much easier with rubber paving. Rubber paving maintains a slightly porous, textured surface which affords two advantages for Canada’s harsh winter snow and ice.  Firstly, water does not pool easily on the surface, reducing the thin layer of glare ice that is the cause of many falls and injuries.  Secondly, for heavier snow/ice layers, the textured surface makes it easier to scrape as compared with concrete where the bottom layer of ice adheres with a ferocious tenacity. If needed, it is safe to use salt or any other de-icer. We recommend using a plastic shovel and outfitting your snow blower with plastic stripping.

Can you install over gravel?

YES – rubber surfacing is typically installed over sub-surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, paving stones, or compacted granular. Some applications have varying substrate that requires proper base preparation. Typically, any solid surface is OK to surface. You don’t need to remove your old asphalt or concrete surface to apply rubber paving over, which is considered additional cost saving.

Shercom has rubber surfacing installations that have been around for over 20 years, and they are still looking great. Rubber paving is a very durable product.  The first rubber paved driveway was installed by Shercom Industries in Saskatoon in 1998 and still looks as good as the day it was applied! With a little care and attention, plan on your Shercom rubber surfacing lasting a very long time.

Can I use rubber surfacing for indoor flooring?

A. Yes, you can, provided you have a water drain under.

Can these surfaces be repaired if needed? Is there a warranty?

Any accidental rips, tears, damage, or stubborn and unsightly stains can be repaired by cutting out the damaged area and reapplying new rubber. We can also provide a maintenance coating that helps re-bond the whole surface.  We offer a 5-year warranty against cracking and a 1 year warranty on labour and materials.  ** Warranty is void if damage is determined to be due to misuse, abuse, or vandalism.

How do I clean it?

Rubber surfacing can be cleaned using a power washer to deal with any spills or stains. It is recommended to use light detergent and ensure the power washer operator does not put the nozzle too close to the surface. High-powered washers can take the paint off a car at too close a range, so be certain not to be too aggressive.

How do I take care of it?

Adding a fresh coat of binder every 5 to 7 years is all it takes to maintain your rubber paving product. We can apply this for you or provide a do-it-yourself kit. This will give the rubber that beautiful shine it had when it was first completed. It prevents flaking or pebbling of the rubber and re-strengthens the surface.

How long does it take to install?

Our expert installers can complete most residential projects within one business day. However, completion timelines are dependent on weather and scale of your project. Upon completion, projects are open to foot traffic in 24 hours and drivable within 72 hours.

Are rubber paving and rubber products toxic?

No, rubber paving and rubber mulch are 100% non-toxic and safe to use in your gardening and home.

How much does rubber paving cost?

Each job is different and depends on the cost on the quantity of material required, selection of colors, required designs, and some other factors. Regardless, you can consider rubber paving to rank second in cost after asphalt, and to be less expensive than both concrete and interlocks. You may also want to factor the savings on surface preparation into your equations, as you do not need to remove your old surfaces prior to rubber paving.

Safer and More Forgiving Surfaces

One of the key benefits of rubber driveway paving is its safety. The rubber coating for concrete driveways helps prevent injuries from falls by providing a cushioned landing. This feature, coupled with the slip-resistant nature of rubber, enhances safety during wet or icy conditions.
